Dear Logan,
I can't believe you are six months old today! All the cliches about time flying by are true...in so many ways it feels like it was just yesterday that we were sitting in the hospital wondering what we were going to do with this perfect little baby we'd been blessed with. In other ways, it feels like you've been a part of our family forever. I have a baby book for you that I promise I will start before your first day of kindergarten. It includes pages for all of your "firsts"...first smile, first roll over, first laugh and on and on. All of those things have been amazing to witness but the last six months have been full of so many other firsts, for you and for me as a new mommy.
I remember the first time I heard myself say "my son". It took me by surprise to hear my voice saying those words but in a strange way I felt really proud at the same time.
I'll also never forget the first (and so far only) time you pooped on the floor at Market of Choice. There was some disagreement as to whether the cause was a poor diapering job on the part of your mommy or your daddy holding you in an awkward position but whatever the cause it was disgusting and embarrassingly funny at the same time. I immediately sent a text to your aunties, stating I would never be able to shop there again. This exaggeration proved to be false, although I can't pass their fancy cheese counter without picking up my step and lowering my head in embarrassment.
Just a few weeks ago you and I shared another first. My first time rocking you to sleep without nursing you! Your daddy kept telling me it was possible but I didn't believe it until I did it for myself. I almost broke down when you got extra squirmy but daddy was in the hallway, cheering me on and telling me to keep going. He has rocking you to sleep down to a science, complete with different rates of rocking depending on how close you are to sleep. He's always ready to rock you to sleep on the rare night when you don't fall asleep while I nurse you at bedtime.
A diaper change last week included a first that I won't document here. I know as your mommy I will spend a lifetime embarrassing you but I'll hold off on starting that for a bit longer. If you really want to know about it, ask your auntie Jo...she got an alarmed text from me following "the incident.".
Logan, you are the best thing that has ever happened to your daddy and me. You are loved so so much and I can't wait for all the "firsts" we have to look forward to with you.
Love,
Mommy
